Record-Breaking Heat Wave Grips Morocco as Temperatures Approach 50°C
A heat wave with a red and orange alert level is raging in several provinces of the Kingdom. Very high temperatures have been recorded in several cities in recent days.
Scorching days in the kingdom with "absolute records" of temperatures during an "exceptional" heat wave, with the mercury approaching 50 degrees and exceeding the monthly normal by 5 to 12 degrees in places, the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) said on Monday.
This scorching weather is due to the rise of a dry and hot air mass from the South, causing a significant increase in temperatures, the DGM specifies.
In addition, monthly records for this month of August have concerned the cities of Taroudant with 49.3°C recorded last Sunday, August 15, 2021, against a previous record of around 48.9°C recorded on August 2, 2012 in Agadir Al Massira (49.1°C on Monday, August 16, 2021 against 48.3°C on August 26, 2010).
The same in Marrakech, where 48.6°C were recorded on Friday, August 13, 2021, just like on August 2, 2012,
In Oujda, 46.7°C were recorded on Friday, August 13, 2021, against 46.2°C on August 6, 2019, while in Guelmim, a record of 47.6°C was recorded on Sunday, August 15, 2021, against 47°C on August 5, 2016, and in Meknes, 46.5°C were recorded on Saturday, August 14, 2021, against a previous record of 45.3°C on August 9, 1925.
These monthly records also concern the cities of Taza, where a maximum temperature of 46.1°C was recorded on Friday, August 13, 2021, then 46.2°C the next day, Saturday, August 14, 2021, against a previous record recorded on August 4, 2021, of around 45.7°C.
In Khouribga, it is a maximum of 45.3°C that was recorded on Friday, August 13, 2021, then 45.5°C the next day, Saturday, August 14, 2021, against a previously recorded record of around 44.1°C on August 8, 2011.
