To travel abroad, a Moroccan can obtain 12 times more foreign currency than an Algerian
To finance a trip abroad, a Moroccan resident can convert up to 100,000 dirhams each year under the basic allowance, or around 9,300 euros. In Algeria, the limit is set at 750 euros for an adult: a difference of more than twelvefold.
In Morocco, the Office des Changes sets the basic personal travel allowance at 100,000 dirhams per person per calendar year. This is not financial assistance: the beneficiary uses their own dirhams to legally purchase foreign currency intended for expenses abroad.

At the reference exchange rate published by Bank Al-Maghrib on August 17, with one euro worth 10.7552 dirhams, this amount represents approximately 9,298 euros. That is 12.4 times the 750 euros available to an Algerian adult.
The Moroccan limit can even go much higher. The basic allowance can be increased by an additional amount corresponding to 30% of the income tax paid or withheld at source the previous year. The total can reach 500,000 dirhams per year, or approximately 46,500 euros at the same exchange rate.
In Algeria, 750 euros and a minimum of seven days
In Algeria, the Bank of Algeria has granted residents aged 19 or over a maximum foreign-exchange allowance of 750 euros since July 2025. Minors aged 12 to under 19 can receive up to 300 euros, limited to two children per family.
The conditions are stricter. In particular, the trip must last at least seven days. The Bank of Algeria specifies that a beneficiary returning before this period must return the foreign currency received. The allowance may be used only once per reference year.
However, the Algerian system was recently modernized. An instruction dated July 13, 2026, now allows this allowance to be used through an international payment card. In Morocco, the allowance can already be loaded onto an international card, transferred, or provided in banknotes.

The difference measures neither the cost of holidays nor the purchasing power of the inhabitants of the two countries: it compares only what their regulations allow them to legally convert for travel. On this sole criterion, the two neighbors remain very far apart: Morocco authorizes, from the basic allowance alone, the equivalent of more than twelve Algerian allowances.
