Morocco Medical Expenses Abroad Reimbursement Guide
A person who has advanced a patient’s medical expenses abroad can recover the money from Morocco. The bank is authorized to transfer the amount already paid, provided that the final invoice and proof of payment are presented.
Hospitalization or medical treatment abroad may require the patient or one of their relatives to settle the bill quickly on site. This advance does not prevent later reimbursement from Morocco.

Exchange regulations indeed authorize Moroccan banks to transfer the corresponding amount when medical expenses have already been paid abroad on behalf of the patient. This is not a reimbursement financed by the bank, but a currency transfer allowing the person who advanced the money to be repaid the justified amount.
The transferable amount corresponds to expenses listed in the documents presented. No general flat rate is set: the bank bases itself on the medical invoice and the payment actually made.
According to the Office of Exchange, reimbursement requires two documents: a final invoice issued in the patient’s name and a payment receipt issued by the establishment or professional who provided the medical service.
Much more than hospitalization
The system does not cover only surgical operations or stays in a clinic. The medical expenses concerned also include consultations, examinations, analyses and other procedures performed by foreign doctors, hospitals, clinics or laboratories.
Also taken into account may be the purchase of medicines, the acquisition of orthopedic equipment, medical evacuation costs and the repatriation of a body. The medicalized transport of a Moroccan patient between two foreign countries also falls into this category.
The invoice must imperatively be issued in the patient’s name. A simple proof of transfer, a bank card receipt or a document in the name of the relative who paid may therefore not be sufficient if the medical service and its beneficiary cannot be clearly identified.
When care has not yet been settled, the procedure is different. The bank can pay the medical establishment directly by transfer or bank check, upon presentation in particular of a medical certificate, an invoice or an estimate and a copy of the patient’s passport or registration card.

For reimbursement after payment, the essential supporting documents remain the final invoice in the patient’s name and the service provider’s receipt. Keeping them therefore makes it possible to prevent a medical expense advanced in emergency abroad from becoming impossible to recover from Morocco.
