Morocco US Military Aid Spain Canary Islands Concerns
Morocco and the United States are preparing a vast military training center in Tan-Tan, dedicated to drones and defense technologies. Its location on the Atlantic coast, facing the Canary Islands, is beginning to raise concerns in the Spanish press.
The Royal Armed Forces and the US Africa Command signed a memorandum on July 13 to create the Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center, or AMTEC.

Planned by 2030, the center will include a multidomain training area, a drone academy and a space dedicated to testing new military capabilities.
According to El Debate, this new rapprochement between Rabat and Washington should alert Spain, particularly due to Tan-Tan’s proximity to the Canary Islands.

The academy will train Moroccan and African operators, instructors and planners in drone use, surveillance, intelligence and strike capabilities.
The experimentation center will allow the development and testing of emerging military technologies, with the participation of Moroccan and American industries.
General Mohammed Berrid believes that the facilities and expertise already available in Morocco will allow rapid transition from project to operations and open possibilities for production and export.
The concern has nothing official about it at this stage. The American statement mentions neither Spain nor the Canary Islands. It mainly reflects the vigilance of part of the Spanish press regarding Morocco’s military strengthening and its rapprochement with Washington.
